The Snow Bike Festival returns to luxurious village of Gstaad in Switzerland this January. Gstaad has been a haven for skiers and celebrities a like but this year Gstaad also welcomes back the Snow Bike Festival for its 3rd edition. The festival welcomes competitors from all corners of the globe who come together to compete, ride and have fun. The festival takes place from 19th to 22nd, 2017 and will feature a 4 Day Stage Race, Eliminator Night Race, Fat Bike and MTB EXPO as well as live music, après ski (for lack of a better word) and partying!
So what is Snow Biking? Snow Biking was invented by cycling enthusiasts in areas where a lot of snow falls throughout large parts of the year such as the Alps. Originally riders would equip their mountain bikes with super wide and grippy tyres in order to give them better traction as they whizzed down the snowy mountains. The thrill from such rides soon led to the birth of the fat bike, a bike especially equipped for snow riding. As the popularity increased so did the technology and in 2015 tyres were released with spikes in order to gain extra traction as well as hybrid bikes – perfect for all seasons.
For a lot of you this will be the first you’ve heard of the Snow bike Festival but if you’re a fan of cycling or extreme sports and want to try something completely different then it’s worth giving the Snow Bike Festival some serious thought. You don’t have to race or compete to try your hand on one of the bikes or get a flavour of what this relatively new sport is all about! The Eliminator Night race is also not to be missed as a spectacle and the EXPO which is hosted inside a heated venue will have some of the leading MTB brands, ski brands as well associated products on show and for sale to visitors, competitors and spectators alike! Oh and did I forget to mention that you’ll be staying in one of Europe’s most luxurious snow resorts!
For those interested in competing a race pack will need to be bought. A race entry pack will currently set you back 690 CHF (around £550) which seems expensive but you do get a lot of bang for your buck. Included in your entry pack is lunch and dinner, participation in all races, free water, gift pack and access to heated pools and hot tubs which is a real bonus! For those who are keen to support and spectate, a supporter package can be bought for 400 CHF (around £320) which gives you access to all rider zones, lunch and dinner as well as the heated pools!
So if you’re looking for something a bit different this winter then the Snow bike Festival is as good an option as you’ll see! You can find out more about the festival here: http://www.snowbikefestival.com/
