The holiday season is almost here, and if you’re planning on hiring a car to take on your holiday abroad or just to help you visit your family, you’ll want to be sure you’re prepared for the process. When hiring a car, many people consider which company they’d like to hire from, which company to purchase car hire insurance from, and price points to get the best deal on both. While these are important things to consider, help yourself avoid the four of the major car hire mistakes this holiday season by also considering the following:
- Will the hire car fit those traveling with me and our luggage?
When hiring a car, many people think about the style of the car: Will it comfortable to drive? Is it like the car I currently have? We often choose what’s comfortable and what’s familiar over what is best suited for our trip. Make sure to consider the number of people traveling with you–and the amount of luggage they’ll have–before you choose; otherwise, you could end up with a saloon when you really needed a 4×4.
- Does the hire car have any existing damage?
Your hire car has most likely been rented before, and there’s a chance it may have previously been in an accident. Before taking the car out on the road, look it over for any damages, such as scratches or dents. Make sure to note this pre-existing damage with the car hire company before you leave so that it cannot be attributed to your trip upon your return.
- Can I hire a car in the country in which I’m traveling?
While you may be old enough and qualified for a license in the UK, in another country you may be ineligible to hire a car for your travels. Make sure that you qualify to hire a car in your destination location while traveling abroad. While you’re at it, be sure to also look up which side of the road you’ll be driving on, basic laws, and documents you will need if you are pulled over while traveling.
- Do you have your own satnav, child care seat, etc?
When preparing for a trip, it’s easy to just add on a satnav and child care seat for use while you travel when you hire a car. While convenient, these little add-ons can become costly. Instead, purchase your own satnav (many are available for the same cost it would be to rent one) and bring your own child care seats.
Now you’re ready to hire a car while avoiding the most common car hire mistakes. When you do make your travel plans, be sure to invest in car hire insurance or travel insurance to help give you added peace of mind while you’re on the go.
